F.A.Q

Frequently Asked Questions

01

What is the difference between MIG, TIG, and stick welding?

MIG (Metal Inert Gas): This is notably the easiest to learn, fast, and great for DIY projects on steel or aluminum. MIG uses a metal inert gas (MIG) gun that feeds wire automatically and shielding gas from a tank. TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas): This is highly precise and aesthetic, perfect for thin metals, stainless steel, and aluminum. It requires high skill, using a torch for heat and a separate filler rod. Finally, Stick welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding): This is best for thick, rusty, or dirty metal and outdoor, heavy-duty repair projects due to its portability and lack of needed shielding gas bottles.

02

What should I look for in a welding service provider?

When selecting a welding service provider, prioritize certified expertise (e.g., AWS/NIW), extensive experience in your specific application, and modern equipment capability. Ensure they follow strict safety protocols, offer high-quality materials, have positive references, and provide clear, proactive communication to ensure project quality and structural integrity. At DEWIS, all of these attributes makes us your best stop for your welding needs.

03

How much should I expect to pay for welding services?

Welding services costs are heavily influenced by the type of metal (steel, aluminum, stainless steel) and the filler materials used. The welding technique (MIG, TIG, Stick) also impacts labor time and cost. Please contact us for a specific quote based on your preference.

04

What training and certifications do welders need to have?

There are Key Welding Certifications you should aim to have:

Certifications are tests that validate a welder's ability to create welds meeting specific standards (WQTR - Welding Qualification Test Record).
  • AWS Certified Welder (CW): The most common industry certification testing proficiency in structural steel, pipe, or sheet metal.
  • 6G Pipe Certification: A highly sought-after certification for high-pressure pipe welding.
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC): Crucial for manufacturing and pressure vessel fabrication.
  • API 1104: Certification for welding oil and gas pipelines.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI): An advanced certification for experienced professionals
  • 05

What safety precautions should I take when welding?

Essential welding safety precautions include: wearing flame-resistant PPE (helmet, leather gloves, jacket), ensuring proper ventilation to avoid toxic fumes, and maintaining a fire-safe, organized workspace. Protect against electrical shock, use appropriate shade filters for eye protection, and ensure no flammable materials are within a 10-meter (35-foot) radius.
